WordPress Features

WordPress is a powerful personal publishing platform, and it comes with a great set of features designed to make your experience as a publisher on the Internet as easy, pleasant and appealing as possible. We are proud to offer you a freely distributed, standards-compliant, fast, light and free personal publishing platform, with sensible default settings and features, and an extremely customizable core.

License and Platform

  • License : WordPress is licensed under the GPL.
  • Platform : PHP (v4.3 or newer) and MySQL(v4 or newer) are required.

Managing and Administering the Weblog

Locally Installed

WordPress is designed to be installed on your own web server, or shared hosting account, which gives you complete control over the weblog. Unlike third-party hosted services, you can be sure of being able to access and modify everything related to your weblog, in case you need to. This also means that you can install WordPress on your desktop or home computer, or even on an Intranet.

Portable Core

You can choose to have the tree of wordpress related files, which form the back-end of your publicly displayed weblog, be in the same directory as the weblog or in a different directory. For example, if you want your weblog at http://example.com (public_html – the public “root” of your webserver or hosting account) and you want to store the wordpress related files and directory tree in http://example.com/wordpress (public_html/wordpress), you can!

Background Image For Header

Should you wish to use an image as a background to your Header (just like the one you see above or this colorful one), get an appropriate image and crop it to size, about 660×150 pixels. A photo editing software like Google’s Photo Editing Software Picasa or Photoshop would do the trick.

After that, upload the image to a free server. You can read about using free hosts like Google Page Creator and Google Groups. We also have a rather comprehensive list of free Image Hosts and File Hosting Services in our article on Manage Blogger Image Storage Space. Check out those sites and choose one that is fast, reliable and enables hotlinking to the uploaded files. Take note of the picture URL.

Next, go back to “Edit HTML” under Template tab. Scroll to where these lines appear:

#header-wrapper {
width:660px;
margin:0 auto 10px;
border:1px solid $bordercolor;

What are Meta Tags?

As a search engine prowls your site, it gathers information from the title, headings, content, and Meta Tags such as description or keywords. It compares the words within each of these sections and “ranks” the site dependent upon how well the information matches. We have more information on how to maximize your meta tag references below.

It is important for website developers to understand that a default installation of WordPress does not contain the description and keywords meta tag data. Meta tags can be added manually, through changes to the Theme template files or through WordPress Plugins.

What are Meta Tags?

The word meta means information about. Meta Tags were created early on to provide concise information about a website. Meta tags list information about the web page, such as the author, keywords, description, type of document, copyright, and other core information.

This is an example of a meta tag for description:

<meta name=”description” content=”This is the
description sentence or short paragraph about
the article or post.” />

You Shound Back Up Your Blog

What are the things that you HAVE to do when it comes to your blog? The chances are that you have these things on your list:

  • write on a regular basis
  • pay attention to SEO practices
  • get other people to visit your blog.

But is backing up on a regular basis part of your must do list? To be honest with you, I do not really do this. When I remember to back up, I do. But I do not have a regular schedule that I follow. DON’T follow my (bad) example.

Backing up your blog is something that should be automatic. It is a practice that you should not forget, whatever happens. Just imagine, what if your server crashes? Or let’s say your site gets hacked? What will happen to all the data that you have amassed over the years? This will not be a problem if your blog is relatively new. You might be able to reconstruct your posts. But imagine losing all your data for 6 months…a year…2 years…. Now that, my friends, would be a catastrophy!

Here is how you can back up your blog if you use WordPress, courtesy of Daily Blog Tips:

1. Use an FTP client to download all the site files (the WordPress folder)
2. Log into phpMyAdmin and select your WordPress database
3. Click on “Export” and make sure that all the WordPress tables are there
4. On the “Structure” section tick “Add Drop Tables,” “Add AUTO_INCREMENT,” and “Enclose table and field names with backquotes”
5. On the “Data” section leave all the boxes unticked
6. Tick “Save as file” and download the database (you can use compression if your database is big)

Needless to say, I shall be doing this NOW.

Open Links in New Window

You want open link in new window or tabs. The links in a Link List and Labels that are normally in the sidebar widget. You would need to change the HTML code in your template. Here, we shall talk about the hack that you can put into your template.

Text Links and Image Links

You change code HTML as follows:

<a href=”URL” target=”_blank” title=”TITLE”>Text</a>

The HTML code of a picture or image link looks like this:

<a href=”URL” target=”_blank” title=”TITLE”><img src=”Image URL” border=”0″ width=”80″ height=”15″ alt=”Description”></a>

The part of the code that tells the browser to open the link in a new browser window or new tab is the target attribute (in blue). If you want the readers to view the link in the same browser window, simply remove target=”_blank” from the code.
